📌Canada’s Environmental Safety Net is Being Shredded – Again
From WCEL: On May 8th, the federal government released a proposal to embark on what is arguably the worst gutting of its environmental impact assessment regime in the last half century, along with dismantling other environmental laws protecting at-risk species, lakes and rivers, and fish. The government quietly published this discussion paper with no press conference and zero fanfare. From Climate Safe Cities: The Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP) has been crucial in helping local governments fund climate resiliency programs across BC, but it has not been renewed in the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions 2026/27 service plan. In a Rare Show of Global Unity, Countries Adopt Landmark Climate Ruling
From Grist: Six years ago, law students at the University of the South Pacific convinced the government of Vanuatu to take the harms wrought by climate change all the way to the International Court of Justice. In 2025, the court sided with them unanimously. In a legally nonbinding advisory opinion, it ruled that the failure of countries to tackle climate change is a “wrongful act” and that nations harmed by a warming planet may seek reparations. On Wednesday, an overwhelming majority of countries in the United Nations voted to adopt a resolution backing the court’s ruling. Read more

Could Nature Itself Hold the Solution to Climate Change?
There is one set of climate solutions that presents no trade-off at all when they are done right. The restoration of natural habitats like forests is an exception in our climate toolkit because it draws on the same network of connections that allowed life to flourish in the first place. The resilience of the natural world comes from ancient, underappreciated forces known as feedback loops. When we referred to the “best” solution, we didn’t simply mean the one with the largest impact in terms of CO2; we meant the best option for improving the livelihoods and well-being of people, too. Wind and Solar Generated More Electricity than Gas Worldwide in April 2026
|
From Ember: Wind and solar generated more electricity than gas globally for the first month ever in April 2026. Together, they generated 22% of global electricity, compared with 20% from gas. The milestone occurred during the first full month of the latest global energy crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East, highlighting how rapidly growing wind and solar generation is reshaping the global power mix even amid fossil fuel market volatility. UN General Assembly Backs Historic World Court Climate Crisis Ruling
From the UN: A landmark General Assembly resolution adopted on Wednesday is “a powerful affirmation” of international law, climate justice and science. The resolution drawn up by Vanuatu - a Pacific island nation on the frontline of the climate crisis, and several other countries - was adopted after intense discussion including multiple proposed amendments with 141 votes in favour, eight against and 28 abstentions. Those voting against were Belarus, Iran, Israel, Liberia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the US and Yemen. “The path to climate justice runs through a rapid, just, and equitable transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.” Read more

Texas Expert Calls Out B.C.’s ‘Free Pass’ for LNG Canada as Expansion Looms
From The Energy Mix: As LNG Canada’s export terminal in Kitimat edges toward a major expansion amid mounting opposition, a veteran Texas air quality expert told The Energy Mix that the British Columbia regulator is giving the facility what he calls a “free pass” on emissions. His assessment comes as documents reveal labelling errors, excessive flaring, black smoke, broken equipment, and a suspended gas purification system at the facility. The Institute for Future Legislators is a three-weekend program for individuals with political aspirations or who wish to deepen their understanding of political systems. This year it will be held at Vancouver Island University (August 15-16 in Nanaimo), UBC (August 22-23 in Vancouver), and SFU (August 29-30 in Vancouver). It provides intensive and practical mentoring and training for anyone who seeks the experience and knowledge necessary to make a difference - whether at the local, provincial, or federal level. From PICS: Our University Climate Knowledge Mobilization Events program supports climate change-related research dissemination, knowledge mobilization, and events hosted by PICS university (UBC, SFU, UNBC, UVic) groups, organizations, departments, or institutes.
