Global Warming 3°C By 2050? What’s Behind The New German Climate Warning
From World Crunch: German scientists warn global warming is accelerating faster than expected, raising the risk of a 3°C rise by 2050 and forcing Europe to confront unthinkable adaptation plans. “We have entered a new stage of climate change: Global warming now appears to be accelerating. We see it in Germany too. The data is so compelling that members of our societies felt they had a duty to speak out, despite all the uncertainty and the usual caution.” Read more

German Scientists Issue Stark Climate Warning
|
From David Suzuki Foundation: German scientists are warning that global warming is accelerating, that the planet could heat by as much as 3°C over pre-industrial levels by 2050 — just 24 years from now — and that we could exceed 5°C of warming by the century’s end. This should be top headline news. It should alarm us all. It should spur politicians to urgent action. The consequences would be catastrophic. A 3°C rise doesn’t mean a temperature increase of that amount over the whole world. Some areas could see temperatures up to 10 degrees higher than normal, reaching more than 50°C.

📌Say NO to C-15's Undemocratic Power Grab!
From 350.org: The Federal Government is on its way to passing legislation that would give certain companies, including Big Oil, a free pass to violate environmental, labour, safety, and privacy laws. Parliament is about to vote on Bill C-15, the Budget Implementation Act. Hidden within it are provisions that would allow federal ministers to exempt ANY entity from the application of any provision of any federal law, other than the Criminal Code, if a minister deems it “in the public interest.” It would roll out the red carpet for the fossil fuel industry. Call your MP to vote NO to Bill C-15 unless these dangerous provisions are removed. Send your letter here

📌Say NO to Exporting Waste to Burn or Lose Overseas (By February 28)
From Genevieve Gallant Executive Director, Office of Religious Congregations for Integral Ecology: The single use plastics export ban was set to come into effect a few weeks ago but instead of implementing it, the government quietly suspended it in December by claiming that environmental benefits are "not proportional to the economic impact". This is such a shameful move. The government's assessment that the effect on domestic plastic pollution will be "negligible" while allowing continued exports is environmentally indefensible. Fossil Fuel Firms May Have to Pay for Climate Damage Under Proposed UN Tax
From The Guardian: Fossil fuel companies could be forced to pay some of the price of their damage to the climate, and the ultra-rich subjected to a global wealth tax, if new tax rules are agreed under the UN. Negotiations on a planned global tax treaty resumed at the UN in New York on Monday, with dozens of countries supporting stronger rules that would make polluters pay for the impact of their activities. But developing countries are worried the current draft of the proposals is too weak, and want more robust backing from the rich world. Read more
