|
From Stand.earth: The Tilbury LNG Phase 2 Expansion project has met resistance since the beginning. It would lock in a million tonnes of GHGs a year for decades. It threatens important salmon habitat, and adds polluting ship traffic. FortisBC is planning to add to customers’ energy bills to cover the cost of the project, while pushing communities toward more fossil fuel use. We need you to wade in! 📌 Halt LNG Expansion Until Health Impacts are Studied
From My Sea to Sky: Dear Ministers, recent studies have found that LNG export terminals flare three times more gas during commissioning than in regular operations. These emissions aren't modelled in environmental assessments, even though commissioning is the most polluting phase and lasts for two years on average. Flaring releases benzene, fine particulates, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and carcinogenic volatile organic compounds—all known to harm human health, even over short exposure periods. Opening of a Trial for Planned Obsolescence Against Epson: A Historic First Step
|
Following a complaint, the printer manufacturer Epson has been summoned before the criminal court on charges of planned obsolescence and misleading commercial practices. By blocking printing when ink cartridges are not yet empty, and prematurely shortening the lifespan of ink pads, the Nanterre public prosecutor’s office considered that Epson had “used techniques deliberately designed to reduce the lifespan of a product in order to increase its replacement rate.” Read more

From The Energy Mix: Despite research showing that Europe has reduced its energy use by almost 30% over the last two decades, and could cut 70% of its remaining natural gas demand by 2040, a Danish engineering and manufacturing firm with operations in more than a dozen countries is still seeing a gap in the way energy efficiency is seen and adopted, compared to new sources of energy supply. From BBC: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) includes the Gulf Stream and helps explain why Britain and north-west Europe are milder than their latitude would suggest. Its scale is hard to grasp. It carries about one petawatt of heat northwards - roughly 50 times the total energy humanity uses. A severe weakening or collapse could bring colder, drier winters to the UK and north-west Europe even as the planet as a whole continues to heat up. Read more

From PICS: Our University Climate Knowledge Mobilization Events program supports climate change-related research dissemination, knowledge mobilization, and events hosted by PICS university (UBC, SFU, UNBC, UVic) groups, organizations, departments, or institutes. The program offers up to $2,500 for eligible events. We aim to support up to 35 events a year and will close when funding is fully subscribed. Read more
