Film Introduction
In 1985, the Haida Nation stood in the path of destruction – and changed the course of Canadian history. On a misty morning that fall, a small group of Haida people blockaded a muddy dirt road on Lyell Island in Haida Gwaii demanding the government work with Indigenous people to find a way to protect the land and the future.
In a riveting new feature documentary drawn from more than a hundred hours of archival footage and audio, Christopher Auchter (Now Is the Time) has recreated the critical moment when the Haida Nation’s resolute act of vision and conscience changed the world.
This film has particular resonance today, as we stand at the threshold of new proposals for resource extraction and infrastructure projects that may present contemporary challenges to the question of Indigenous sovereignty over their own lands.
The Stand made its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival in October 2024, where it received an honourable mention from the Best British Columbia Film award jury.
Running time 1:34. The screening will be followed by small group discussions for anyone wishing to participate.
